CARDEALERSEO.COMPANY
01Independent and used

You own your website. Almost nobody in this business does.

Every franchise store reading this page is locked into a platform it cannot edit. You are not. That single fact makes the entire technical program available to you, and it is worth more than most independents realize.

The problem you have instead is arithmetic. You are paying a per-lead price to third-party marketplaces that has gone up every year, for leads that are shopped simultaneously against four other lots on the same platform.

The goal is not to leave the marketplaces. It is to stop being wholly dependent on them, so the price they set stops being the price you have to pay.

A franchise store gets some volume for free because people search the brand. You get none of that. Your shoppers search a body style, a price band, a payment, or a specific model they have already decided on, and whoever ranks for that phrasing gets the visit.

That is a harder start and a fairer fight. Brand terms cannot be won by better work. Model, price-band and location terms can, and the marketplaces holding them are generic pages competing against a page that could carry your actual stock, your actual pricing and your actual reconditioning detail.

The second competitive set is the ten or fifteen other independents within a reasonable drive, most of whom have a site nobody has touched since it was built and no content beyond an inventory feed. That is a genuinely soft field, and it is the one you can win first.

04What goes wrong

What we usually find on an independent site

  • Inventory feed with no crawlable pathThe stock is on the site but reachable only through a JavaScript filter with no linkable URLs. Search cannot see inventory that has no address.
  • Sold vehicles left live indefinitelyNobody set up retirement, so units sold eight months ago are still indexed. Crawl budget goes to cars that are gone and shoppers land on disappointment.
  • Thin or duplicated vehicle descriptionsDescriptions pulled straight from the feed, identical to every other lot running the same feed. Nothing there is yours.
  • No content above the inventoryNothing about financing with weak credit, nothing about trade valuation, nothing comparing the models you actually stock. That is where the pre-shopping searches go.
  • Local profile half configuredCategories wrong, hours stale, no service attributes, and reviews collected passively rather than asked for.
  • Total marketplace dependencyNinety percent of leads arriving from a channel whose price you do not control, on a contract you renew because you have no alternative.
Stop paying for the same lead four other lots are buying at the same time.
05The program

What we do when you actually own the site

Technical first, because for once it is entirely available. Real crawlable URLs for inventory, a sold-unit policy that retires cleanly instead of leaving traps, and search results pages that serve browse intent rather than duplicating each other.

Then content, aimed squarely at the searches that happen before anyone is ready to look at stock. Financing questions, trade questions, model comparisons for the vehicles you actually carry. This is where marketplaces are weakest, because their pages are generic by necessity and yours do not have to be.

Then authority, which is what lets any of the above outrank a domain the size of a national marketplace. Real placements delivered as live URLs, plus properties you own permanently.

Local visibility runs throughout, because for a lot with one location it is the highest-intent traffic you will ever get and it costs nothing per lead once it works.

07Questions

Questions from stores like yours

Can I actually outrank Cars.com or AutoTrader?

For their own generic pages, rarely. For long-tail model, trim, price-band and location searches, regularly. The realistic target is not beating a national marketplace outright, it is capturing the specific searches where a real local page is genuinely the better result.

Will this let me cancel my third-party subscriptions?

Probably not, and we would not advise trying. The honest goal is shifting the mix so those channels stop being the only thing filling your funnel, which changes your position when the renewal comes round.

My site is on a small local builder. Is that a problem?

Usually the opposite. Small builders tend to give you full access, which means the technical work is actually possible. The one thing worth checking is whether inventory pages have real, linkable URLs.

How does this handle stock that turns over fast?

By treating inventory pages and evergreen pages differently. Inventory needs fast crawling and clean retirement. Model, financing and trade content stays up permanently and does the ranking work that individual units never will.

What program size fits a 30-unit lot?

Golden at $235 usually, which covers 20 keywords. The calculator will tell you the same thing: below roughly $50,000 in modeled annual gross it stops recommending anything larger.

Do you write the vehicle descriptions?

Not individually, since they turn over too fast to be worth it. Content plans go to the pages that stay up: model research, comparisons, financing and trade. That is where content earns its keep.
